The pawn and promotion
Step 1 of 8
The pawn only moves forward, one square at a time. It can never go back. From its starting square it may also move two squares on its first move: the pawn on e2 can go to e3 or e4.
The pawn moves straight but captures diagonally: it can take an opponent’s piece on one of the two squares diagonally in front of it. The pawn on e4 is blocked and cannot move forward. But it can capture on d5 or f5.
Watch the pawn move.
Move 0 of 3
Move the pawn to the star. You have two moves; remember that the first one may be two squares.

The pawn on c2 has your own pawn in front of it, so it cannot move straight. But it can capture diagonally. Capture all three black pawns with it, one after another.
Task in progress
When a pawn reaches the last rank, it promotes: it becomes a queen, a rook, a bishop or a knight. You choose. Most players pick a queen, because she is the strongest piece. This white pawn will promote when it reaches e8.
Move the pawn to the star on the last rank. When it arrives, choose what it becomes.

Sometimes a knight is better than a queen. Push the pawn to e8 and choose a knight. The knight attacks the black king (this is called check) and the queen on c7 at the same time.
