• Pin

  A piece cannot move without exposing a more valuable one behind it. Find the pin and make use of it.100 puzzles

• Skewer

  Attack a valuable piece; when it moves away, the piece behind it is left hanging. Find the skewer and take the piece.100 puzzles

• Discovered attack

  Move one piece out of the way and the piece behind it attacks. Find the double threat and win material.100 puzzles

• Back-rank mate

  When a king is stuck behind its own pawns, a rook or queen landing on the back rank is mate. Find it.100 puzzles

• Mate in 1

  Give checkmate in one move. The king must have no square to run to and nothing to capture or block with.100 puzzles

• Mate in 2

  Give checkmate in two moves: first a move that forces your opponent, then mate. Think about their replies too.100 puzzles

• Capture the defender

  Take or drive away the piece that protects another one; the piece left unprotected is yours. Find the defender.100 puzzles

• Deflection
