The centre
Step 1 of 6
A piece in the centre sees more squares. The knight on d4 can go to 8 squares, but the knight in the corner on h1 to only 2. That is why both sides want d4, e4, d5 and e5 in the opening.
Watch the fight for the centre.
Move 0 of 7
You are playing White. Move a pawn two squares forward into the centre.
Task in progress
You are playing Black. White played d4 and wants the whole centre. Take the pawn on d4.
Task in progress
White wants to bring a knight into the game. Which square is better?
Task in progress
Now you play. With White, play e4 and d4, then develop your knight with Nf3 and win the pawn on d4 back with it. Black makes its own moves.
