The Queen's Gambit
Step 1 of 6
This opening is called the Queen's Gambit: 1.d4 d5 2.c4. A gambit means offering the opponent a pawn. White offers the pawn on c4 to pull Black's pawn on d5 away from the centre. Even if Black takes on c4, White usually wins that pawn back.
Watch the line where Black does not take the pawn: Black guards d5 with e6.
Move 0 of 10
Play White: d4, c4, Nc3, Bg5 and e3 in turn. Black makes its own moves.
Task in progress
Now play Black. This time Black takes the pawn; this is called the Queen's Gambit Accepted. Play d5, dxc4, Nf6, e6 and c5 in turn. White will win the pawn back with Bxc4.
