King and pawn against king
Step 1 of 8
King and pawn against a lone king. The secret to winning: your king goes in front of the pawn. The white king is on e6, in front of its pawn. The black king cannot block the pawn, and the pawn will become a queen.
A rook pawn is different. If the black king gets into the a8 corner, White cannot win: the black king never leaves the corner, and if White pushes too hard it is stalemate. With a rook pawn the game is a draw.
Watch: the white king steps to d7 and holds e8. The pawn walks forward and becomes a queen.
